Wedding Month: August 2005
Friday, August 5 – packed AFTER work (took 3 hours) then departed. Only drove 2 hours before pulling over and getting some sleep.
Saturday, August 6 – drove most of the day arriving in Grand Falls area by suppertime.
Sunday, August 7 – Went for a hike with the family. Brittany got stung on the eyelid by a bee. Sydney, her cousin, is allergic so Tammy had allergy medication with her. The swelling went down in no time.
Monday, August 8 – Drove to southeastern New Brunswick, i.e. Havelock.
Tuesday, August 9 – called some people, made appointments with the caterer and cake baker. Did a bunch of other things to prepare for the wedding. Details escape me 3 weeks afterwards. J
Wednesday, August 10 – Ran around ALL day doing errands from Sussex to Moncton and back to Havelock. Benji was with us. Picked up a Helium tank for balloons.
Thursday, August 11 – Women of the Wedding Party lunch (4 sisters, Riah, Brittany, Janet); met at Jackie’s in Sussex Corner then ate at the All Seasons restaurant down the street. Visited lots, later the four sisters ate at Pizza Delight.
Friday, August 12 – Decorated the legion from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The caterers didn’t arrive until 11 a.m. We set up the tables but they needed to put on the linens. An hour late for the rehearsal; it shouldn’t be this stressful. Sampled some of the wedding wine Bonnie brought up. Had dinner with both families at Family Favourite in Petitcodiac. Met the cake woman at the legion. She brought the cake. We were going to place strawberries on it, but ended up not bothering with it. It was perfect as it was, all 4 chocolate layers!
There are quadrillion stars in rural New Brunswick. At my parents place, the night before our wedding Lorne & I got out of the car and I mentioned how many stars were out. We walked to a clearing from the trees, he hugged me from behind and when we both looked up we saw a shooting star! That was so nice, and we took it as a sign that the wedding would go well. :)
Saturday, August 13 – got married! It poured in the morning so the ceremony was held inside at the Legion, however it cleared enough to have photos taken outside, thankfully.
Sunday, August 14 – woke up in the honeymoon suite at Chateau Moncton. Beautiful place and it’s bigger than our condo. Brittany was MIA but she landed at her grandparent’s in Riverview. Made it to Havelock for lunch (left over wedding meal), then opened gifts with Mom and Jackie watching. Lorne & I headed back out, spent the night at the Rest Well Motel on the old highway. One of the few nights while on “vacation” that we got to be alone! J
Monday, August 15 – went to Parlee Beach with Brittany, Steven, Janet and Sean after cruising Shediac. It was a nice, sunny day. Lorne lost his wedding ring in the sand. He and Janet squared off and area and looked for 30 minutes before Janet had the notion to contact the lifeguard. She contacted some guy that showed up within minutes with a metal detector. He said, “There it is”. Lorne still could not find it. So the guy had to scoop it out and there is was. It cost him twenty dollars to find the ring. Not too bad. I thought it was a lost cause. J
Tuesday, August 16 – went to PEI with Brittany. Met up with Lorne’s parents at his dad’s brother’s place in St. Louis near Alberton (north end of the island). Stayed over in the camper trailer.
Wednesday, August 17 – had seaweed pie at the Seaweed Café in Miminegash before traveling around the island. Missed the glass bottle house (drove right by it; don’t blink!). Made our way to Kensington, Burlington and Cavendish. Returned ($39.50 to get off the island) and ate in NB. Made it to Havelock by midnight.
Thursday, August 18 – did some errands and running around during the day. Visited Lone Pine Campground, Sussex in the evening and spent the night in Lorrie’s and Dan’s camper trailer.
Friday, August 19 – ate breakfast at the Blue Bird Restaurant at the old four corners in Sussex. Went to Jackie’s and Jamie’s where we all hooked up and headed to Fundy National Park. Ate lunch, viewed the ocean, visited some lookout points and swam in a salt-water pool. That was the most fun and Hunter even floated around a bit on his own (with water wings on his arms). Riah can swim amazingly, easily jumping off the diving board into 9-foot waters. She cannot actually dive though. Many attempts to demonstrate putting her head in first failed, as she always ended up “jumping” in. J Stopped at a gift shop then for ice cream. Returned “home” to Havelock the long way by driving the Fundy trail through Hillsborough and Riverview. Mom had dinner for us (cleaned up her left-overs). Angie called, Bonnie called; and then we headed down to Sussex Corner after Jackie and Jamie to have a bonfire. I was up until 1 a.m.
Saturday, August 20 – both cars again headed to Havelock. Mom had made lunch and Angie joined us. Unfortunately Bonnie didn’t make it. Jackie didn’t join us, but later Angie, Lorne & I went into the graveyard. Angie placed flowers, an ornament and a candle for Rollie. She said she always cranks up the car stereo for him to listen to the music so we did. Dad has pretty much made a shrine out of the area with trees, shrubs, flowers and cement benches to sit on. Lorne then went to Riverview to drop Brittany off at her grandparent’s place. Janice (cousin) and Dana dropped in. Angie and I scooted up to check out a yard sale and to visit Rollie’s accident site where Dad planted a white wooden cross. Angie nailed a small wind chime to the back of it. It was very nice.
Returned home, Angie and I had supper in Havelock. Mom and Dad were going to a gospel country music church event. Angie left. Lorne and I went to Scott and Gayle O’Donnell’s place for the evening.
Sunday, August 21 – Gayle made pancakes. Lorne and I went to pick up Benjamin then return to the O’Donnell’s to hook up to go to The Dukes of Hazard. Benjamin didn’t end up sticking around though but we saw the movie anyway then ate at Vito’s Pizza. The boys were cranky, long day and they were up late the night before.
Monday, August 22 – Lorne picked up Brittany then we drove to New Denmark in the afternoon. Attended the visitation for Lorne’s brother-in-law’s Dad, Elmer Christensen, his sister Tammy’s father-in-law. We stayed several hours and spent the night at the Settler’s Inn in Plaster Rock. Brittany convinced her cousin, Allana to come with us even though she was quite upset over the loss of her “Papa”. There were 2 double beds, plenty of room.
Tuesday, August 23 – had breakfast at the truck stop in Plaster Rock with Lorne, Brittany, Allana, her half-brother Brad (Allan’s son), Tammy (Lorne’s sister) and Lorne’s mother Bernice. Went to Tammy’s to “get ready”. The funeral was at 2 p.m.; we arrived at 1 with the family. Went to the gravesite as well then back to the church for a “lunch”. Afterwards, went to Brent and Joanne’s place. Her son Ethan has an 8-week old little Yorkshire terrier called Peanut. Not yappy like her Shitzu, Ebony. The kids played on the trampoline until we departed around 7:30 p.m. A long drive back to Havelock, we arrived about 4 hours later.
Wednesday, August 24 – packed Brittany’s bags. Argued a bit over her fish that she bought with her aunts and cousins however it came down to parenting and Lorne said they weren’t going on the plane. He had called already and they were officially/legally NOT allowed. She wanted to try to smuggle them. The real reason was that she got the fish to prove to her mother that she could take care of them, and be allowed to keep them. However, they probably would have died had I not fed them myself. She was a busy girl on vacation. No time to care for a pet for sure! However, no matter how the entire vacation went, my last hours with my new stepdaughter may have made me appear like the wicked stepmother. Met grandparents Alain (Dianna and Robert) at the airport with Brittany’s brother Josh too. Brittany had the same flight as Steven so they could fly back together.
Thursday, August 25 – Mom and Dad went to Sussex; Gayle dropped in on her intramural rounds (she’s a Physiotherapist) then John Corey picked up Lorne and I to go to lunch at the Cornhill Nurseries around 1 p.m. – the new café there. We took a scenic drive through the hills of Corn Hill where John pointed out the largest cornfield in New Brunswick – 250 acres large! The food was good, John and I shared a bottled of red wine. Then we strolled the gardens a bit more. I bought apple jelly. Got home by 5 p.m. when Mom and Dad were having supper. Then Lorne and I drove to Moncton to meet friends Bette and Laura at Sasha’s downtown, a nice, new-to-us bar / restaurant. We had some drinks outside then went inside to eat (it was cooling down) and had more drinks, and dessert. It was their treat! We did well today! Bette and Laura didn’t make it to the wedding so it was good to see them before we left. Dropped off some wine to folks that we didn’t get to see again before heading to Havelock.
Friday, August 26 – up fairly early to pack, then had breakfast. Dropped off more wine, called Benjamin (not working), dropped in to see Angie at her workplace, called Bonnie, dropped in to see Jackie at home. She was babysitting and her friend Sandra was there. Riah wanted us to stay for the bonfire they were having that evening. I said we’d be in Quebec. She didn’t know where that was. J Gassed up (over $50 to fill my tank) around noon and headed north. Drove all afternoon, arriving around 4 p.m. Visited 3 sets of Lorne’s mother’s siblings: Uncle Christopher and Goldie and their 3 kids (Natasha, Kristy, Owen) and Rottweiler Dutchess (beautiful 12-week old puppy), Aunt Marilyn (her daughter, her 2 kids and dog were there; we didn’t see this dog because it is also a yappy Shitzu, sister to Ebony, Joanne’s dog and was behind closed doors), and Uncle Mont and Linda (they have 2 nice dogs). Ate dinner at Tammy’s, dropped in to see Joe and Bernice (my new in-laws) then headed out of town. Drove 200 km, about half an hour past Riviere-du-Loup to a decent motel.
Saturday, August 27 – Drove all day (9 hours). I passed the wheel over to Lorne once we hit Ontario. Tired driving in the sun. Arrived in Pickering around 7 p.m. or so. Carried up 5 loads each of luggage and bags from the car, then picked up the doggies. They seemed well fed and loved during our time away. Not as excited as I thought they’d be to see us. But they sure were glad to get “home”.
Sunday, August 28 – unpacked! And continued to do so for weeks to come...
